TC Design Group develops computer-based instrumentation utilizing an approach which draws from both the Distributed Development and Virtual Team paradigms. Using web-based communication, collaboration and development tools (Coates, 1998), we are able to marshall disparate resources, gain better control of project costs, utilize skilled developers or fabricators located anywhere in the world, and eliminate the overhead associated with maintaining a large central office/laboratory facility. Industry standard methodologies and best practices such as object oriented design using the UML are employed as part of our development process.

TC Design Group, LLC was founded in early 2005 by Thomas D. Coates Jr., PhD. to offer software and hardware development services to researchers in the life sciences. In college, Dr. Coates studied biology, electronics, and computer science, earning a B.S. in biology in 1995 from Virginia Commonwealth University. He continued on to graduate school and matriculated in 2001 with a PhD in Neuroscience from Pennslvania State University. His Doctoral thesis titled, "A Neural Network Based Cybernetic Interface for Identification of Simple Stimuli Based on Electrical Activity in an Intact Whole Nerve" demonstrated a rudimentary interface to the optic system of the Horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus). Dr. Coates and his company hope that through the development of better tools with which to study the brain and nervous system that the basis for neurological function and dysfunction may be understood. Better understanding will lead to new treatments and cures for what are now untreatable or incurable conditions.
